Nelda Ruth (Spence) Brines, 68, died Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009 at her home in Goldsby following a brave battle with cancer. She was born April 26, 1941 in Gilmore, Texas to Grady and Nora Spence and was a long-time resident of Hooker. A homemaker, she also worked at the Hooker TV cable office and at the City of Hooker. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Preceding her in death are her parents; two sisters, Virginia Spence and Doris Smothermon; two brothers, Henry Spence and Kenny Spence; one sister-in-law, Pat Spence; and one brother-in-law, Harvey Burkett. Survivors include her husband, Luther Brines of the home; a daughter, Jarata Smith and her husband Mike of Midwest City; two grandsons, Lucas and Austin Smith; three brothers, Bill Spence and his wife Frances of Guymon, Robert Spence and his wife Juanita of Elk City and Marvin Spence and his wife Beth of Alva; two sisters, Faye Burkett of Clovis, N.M. and Loyce Spence of Eagle Pass, Texas; and a host of nieces and nephews. She donated her body to University of Oklahoma Science and Medical Research. A memorial service was held Monday, Sept. 28 at the Goldsby Community Center. The family requests memorials to the American Cancer Society in care of the Relay For Life of Texas County, P.O. Box 365, Hooker, OK 73945.
