Bio

Ida May McDaniel was the youngest child of her parents, Beuford Francis McDaniel (1836-1907) and Cynthia Catherine Powell (1837-1925) - who also were great, great, grandparents of mine. Ida May was first married at the age of 29 to a man named Charles Wesley Slagle on Oct. 24, 1902, in Gallia County, Ohio. They had one known son, Wilford Forrest Slagle who was born on March 27, 1905, in Fayette County, Ohio. This first marriage apparently did not last long or her first husband died prior to 1909. Either that or they were divorced. I suggest the latter as there is no death record - that I'm aware of - for Ida May's first husband. Ida May was married a 2nd time to Meshack W. Vincell on March 6, 1909, again in Gallia County, Ohio. This marriage also produced one child, a daughter named Annie E. Vincell who was born on February 14, 1910, in Lawrence County, Ohio. Ida May was married a 3rd time to a man whose surname was Sherman. This marriage took place sometime prior to 1930. We know this because Ida May was recorded on the 1930 census of Grand Junction City, Mesa County, Colorado as follows: SLAGLE Wilferd F. - Head - Male - White - 25 - Single - b. Ohio - fb U.S. - mb U.S. Laborer - Mine SHERMAN Ida J. - Mother - Female - White - 66 (error) - MARRIED - 1st married at 29 - b. Ohio - fb Ohio - mb Kentucky (error) - Housekeeper - Private Home VENCEIL Annie E. - Sister (sister of Wilfred) - F - W - 20 - Single - b. Ohio - fb Ohio - mb Ohio EICKELMAN Philip I. - Nephew - M - W - 8 months - Single - b. Colorado - fb Ohio - mb Ohio The age recorded here for Ida (66) is clearly off by ten years and the POB for her mother is also incorrect but this is very clearly her as she was living with both of her children (Wilfred and Annie) by her first two husbands - AND her surname was recorded as SHERMAN. Ida was recorded a 2nd time on the 1930 census of Mesa County, CO. (in Fruitvale) as follows: SHERMAN Ida - Servant - F - W - 56 - DIVORCED - 1st mar at age 29 - b. Ohio - fb Ohio - mb Ohio - House Helper - Private Home. Here Ida was recorded with her real age (56) and as DIVORCED and she was once again recorded as having been first married at 29 (which she was when she married Charles W. Slagle) and her POB and the POB for both of her parents were recorded correctly. Lastly Ida was again recorded as "Ida SHERMAN" on the 1940 census of Redlands, Mesa County, Colorado as living next door to her son Wilfred Slagle. On the 1940 census she was recorded as a 67 year old WIDOW who had an 8th grade education and was born in Ohio.
