Isaiah Washburn was born in the state of Vermont March 22, 1839. He later moved to the state of Illinois and at the breaking out of the Civil War he enlisted in Co. G 45th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment. In 1862 he was wounded at the battle of Fort Donelson and was not able to do much active service and was honorably discharged. March 1st he was united in marriage to Mary Ann Wright at Beloit, Wisc. To them were born five children, Mrs. Ida Spensley of Livingstone, Calif., Mrs. Carrie Olson of Underwood, S.D., Mrs. Lena Ferguson of Omaha, Mrs. Minnie La Burg (Note: this is an error in the obituary: the aforementioned daughter should be listed as Mrs. Mary Ellen LaBerge) of Detroit, and Theodore, who died in infancy. In 1870 Mr. Washburn came to South Dakota and that has been his home since and most of the time in Vermillion and vicinity. For some time he has not been well and Saturday, March 26, 1921, he passed away at 6:40 a.m. at his home in this city. There survive him the four daughters, his wife having died January 18, 1918. Funeral service was held from the Methodist church Monday at 2 p.m. conducted by the pastor, Rev. Chas E. Wilcox. Interment was made in Bluff View Cemetery.
