Mary Ann Stewart And again, this time taking a mother, death has removed one of the pillars on which the upgrowth of this country has rested. Death has robbed us of a noble woman, who gave the best years of her life in rearing a family, and whose sons are among the best of the country. Mrs. Chauncey Stewart departed this life at her home southwest of this city Monday morning, November 23. She was born in Oswego, N.Y., April 18, 1833, her maiden name being Mary A. Southworth. December 18 1850, she was married to Chauncey Stewart at Mexico, N.Y. They came to Illinois in 1856, and to Nebraska in 1880, settling on the farm which they have since made the family home and here the children reached their majority and went forth to do their part in life. Ten children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Stewart: Chester and John of Hebron, Illinois, William J. and Frank of Ord, Mrs. Lucy Brown of St. Paul, George of Craig, Mrs. T.J. Brown of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Mark, Mrs Lou Warne and Chauncey of St. Paul. The mother has always been an inspiration to her children and in rearing such a family she has done a life work that earns her rare credit. The funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in this city yesterday, Rev. Underwood officiating, and the remains laid to rest in the city cemetery followed by a large concourse of people paying their respects to the departed and recognizing the words, “well done,” are applicable to the fullest degree. To the husband and children who have lost wife and mother the Republican extends sincere condolences, assuring them that the sacrifices which mother has made, have not been made in vain, that in her children she still lives, and the presence that cannot be here in body is still with you and the look of a mother's face will ever be present to help you over the hard places and the difficulties as of yore. The Republican - St. Paul, Howard, Nebraska NOTE: There is a discrepancy concerning Mary's maiden name as it is stated as Southworth in some documents including her obituary and Southard in other documents.
