Bio

The Dannebrog News, December 2, 1909, page 1, transcribed by Linda Berney Once more last week, the hand of death removed from this community one of the early pioneers of the Loup country, a man who for 30 years has been a progressive builder in the interests of this part of Nebraska. At the ripe age of 90 years, 11 months and 3 days, Chauncey Stewart Sr. died on November 16th. He was born in Mexico, New York. In 1850 he was married to Miss Mary Southard. In 1856 this family moved to Illinois where they made their home until 1880, when they came to Nebraska, settling on the farm south of this city, where they have made their home ever since, and where their children have reached manhood's estate. Almost exactly a year ago the wife died at the same family home, leaving the aged husband and father alone. For the last few years the old people had made their home with their son, Chauncey, and after the death of his wife, Mr. Stewart continued to live there until his death. To Mr. and Mrs. Stewart, ten children have been born. Chester and John of Hebron, Ill., William J. of St. Paul, George of Craig, Mrs. T. J. Frank of Ord, Mrs. Lucy Brown of St. Paul, Mrs. T. Brown of Colorado, Mark, Mrs. Lou Warne and Chauncey of St. Paul, all of whom are living. To have reared such a family, and have them good, clean and upright citizens, is in itself a life work of which any man might be proud and Mr. Stewart will have the loving memory of his children during all their lives. The funeral was held in the M. E. Church, Rev. Underwood officiating, and the remains were laid to rest beside the wife in Elmwood cemetery. To the children, who will always honor the memory of their father, the Republican extends condolences. - St. Paul Republican
