Bio

Sixteen-year-old James Jason Jares was buried Monday in White Rock Cemetery near Ross following his Feb. 14 death at his West Home. James, better known as Jason to his family and friends, died more than two years after being diagnosed with a rare form of facial bone cancer. Those who knew him, will remember his courage during the months after his diagnosis with cancer. For Jason and his family (mother Dovie, sisters Jennifer and Judy and brother Jeff) their world first changed on Oct. 5, 2989 when the then West Middle School eighth grader learned the growth on the left side of his face was diagnosed as osteo sarcoma, more commonly referred to as bone cancer. From there followed unsuccessful medication treatments to shrink the cancerous tumor leading to surgery on his jawbone and chemotherapy. The West community responded with fund raisers to help offset some of the financial strain accompanied with Jason's medical bills. An April 22, 1989 benefit, sponsored by the West Middle School, helped raise over $20,000 for the West youth and a benefit fund was established at both West banks. During his years of treatment at the M.D. Anderson Hospital, he became a member of the Sunshine Kids, an organization for kids with cancer. Through this group he met G. W. Bailey, who is better known to area residents for his character as Captain Harris in the Policy Academy movies. The two became good friends. A very dedicated University of Texas Longhorn fan, Jason received many UT souvenirs including a UT football helmet which was purchased and presented to him during the April 1989 benefit. He also received a football in January, 1992, signed by Texas football coaches and all the players. Prior to that he was given an autographed football signed by former UT great Earl Campbell. He also received numerous items autographed by both present and past UT athletes. Jason always wanted to meet some Texas Longhorn football players and his wish came true as he got to tour the Longhorn's Memorial Stadium facilities and was able to walk out on the field with the football players during on of their games. At the beginning of February, 1992, the Make-A-Wish Foundation presented Jason with a curio cabinet to display all his Texas Longhorn souvenirs and other memorabilia. Memorials may be made to a scholarship fund set up in his father's name, Don Jares, at West High School. His father, a West Hight School teacher, died of cancer on May 11, 1983. Memorials may also be sent to the Sunshine Kids of Houston or to the Cancer Society. The West News, Thursday, February 20, 1992
