John Arthur Eckhout, 61, of Amherst died Tuesday, June 9, 2009, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, June 12, 2009, at St. James Catholic Church in Kearney. The Rev. Jose Chavez will officiate. Mr. Eckhout was born July 5, 1947, in Kearney, Nebraska to Bernard and Mary (Nickman) Eckhout. Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Eva (Linden); two sons and a daughter-in-law, Byron and Inett Eckhout of Kearney and Nathan Eckhout of South Sioux City; two daughters, Rita Eckhout of Omaha and Tara Urwiller of Amherst; his mother of Kearney; four sisters, Neomi Hascall of Bellevue, Mary Alice Kenney of Amherst, Bernadine Roth of San Bernadino, California, and Catherine Daake of Elm Creek; and two brothers, Jerome Eckhout of Pleasanton and James Eckhout of Amherst. Additional survivors include seven grandchildren, Dakota, McKenzie, Ranessa, Hunter Lee Hadan, Aaron John, Ariana Marie, and Averyl Marie. John graduated from Amherst High School in 1965 and Kearney State College in 1969. He served in the U.S. Army from June 12, 1969, to July 14, 1970, in Vietnam. He received the Purple Heart. He married Eva Jean Linden on August 14, 1971, in Pleasanton. They made their home on a farm north of Amherst. He was a member of St. John's Church in Amherst and the VFW. John was preceded in death by his father.
