SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Bernardine Eckhout Roth, 76, of San Bernardino died Tuesday, June 17, 2014, in San Bernardino. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Catholic Church in Amherst, Neb. Burial will be at Stanley Cemetery near Amherst. She was born July 31, 1937, to Bernard and Mary Eckhout of Amherst. In June 1959, she married William J. Roth of Boonville, Ind. Bernardine lived on the Eckhout farm until she graduated from Amherst High School in 1954. She had three sisters, Neomi Haskell, Mary Kenny and Catherine Daake, and three brothers, Jerome, Jim and Johnny Eckhout. Bernardine was the Homecoming queen at Kearney State College where she graduated in 1957. The first wedding performed at St. John's Catholic Church in Amherst was Bill's and Bert's. They had five children, Daniel, Anne, Michael, Paul and Patrick. Bill was in the U.S. Air Force and they settled in Southern California in 1975 in Rialto. Bert, as she was called, had 11 grandkids, Amanda, Ashley, Andy, Brett, Ryan, Tyler, Cayman, Brandon, Jackson, Presley and Brady. She also had two great-grandkids and one on the way, Roslynn, Jesse and Antonia. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bernard and Mary Eckhout; brother, Johnny Eckhout; and grandson, Brett Kwasney.
