Bio

Born as Minerva Battershaw. She was named after paternal grandmother. Maiden name is conflicted. Lula shows up as Lula Lowes and Lula Battershaw. Her full name also fluctuates on her childrens' documents, with a full name of Lula Mae Lois Lowes. In 1880 Minerva Battershaw was living with her family, Eugene Battershaw and Mary Williams, along with her sisters Nellie (Helen) and Ida. Ida died in Eaton County on 6 August 1884 from spinal mengintis. Ida was 6 years 10 months 27 days and died in Spring Arbor, Michigan. At some time in 1886, Minerva was abandoned at the Poor Farm in Jackson County. ADOPTION PAPERS FOUND: Original birth name was Minerva Battershaw born in March 1880, the legitimate daughter of Eugene Battershaw and Mary Williams. Minerva ended up as a ward of the court in Branch County, Michigan and was a resident of the Michigan State Public School in Branch County. On 3 February 1890, W. I. "William Isaac" and Cressenia"Christena" Culvon Lowes filed for adoption of Minerva and also a change of name from Minerva Battershaw to Lula Belle Lowes. Also, as a collective matter, on January 30, 1890, W.I. and Cressenia Lowes filed papers in Edmunds County, South Dakota, for the adoption and change of name for Minerva Battershaw. In 1900 the Lowes family is living in Shelby, Oceana County, Michigan. Background for father Eugene: He was the son of Daniel Battershaw and Minerva Horton. Born in Massville, New York. On 4 July 1871 Eugene married Lucinda Thomas in Calhoun County, Michigan. Lucinda died 20 April 1875 in Eaton County, Michigan of a disease of the bowels. She was the daughter of George Thomas and Nancy Wellman. They were the parents of Hiram Battershaw and Hiram was raised by his grandparents after the death of Lucinda. On 2 December 1875 Eugene married Mary Williams in Jackson County, Michigan. They were the parents of Etta May "Nellie", Ida, Minerva, Etta May b. 1883, George Benjamin b. 1885, David. Sometime after Ida died, Mary and Eugene were divorced. Mary placed her daughter Minerva in the orphanage and then moved with her daughter Helen to Pennsylvania. Mary was living in Hazelton PA and is documented as Helen's mother. Mary gave consent for Helen to marry Thomas Clifford in July 1900. Helen married again to John Dennis, who was 25 years older than her. On 16 January 1906 Eugene married Alsina Levan (nee Swan) Thomas in Eaton County, Michigan; they were divorced. --------------------------------- Lula was married to Earl Henry Beckwith November 24, 1896 in Benona, Oceana County, Michigan. Earl was 20 and Lula was 16. Her parents are documented as unknown. Her birth date is documented on the 1900 census as June 1880, her age is 16 in 1896 and the headstone has an 1882 birth year. Her death certificate claims she was 29 years old when she died. 1900 census has parents place of birth as unknown. She was documented as being born in Michigan.
