He was the son of Daniel Battershaw and Minerva Horton. Born in Mannsville, New York. Source: affidavit in widow's pension package of his father. Middle name also confirmed by same affidavit. NOTE: LAST NAME IS OFTEN FOUND SPELLED AS BATTLESHAW, Battleshall and Battershall. Some of his children took the spelling of Battleshaw. Father was killed in action during the battle of Petersburg in 1864 in the Civil War and his mother remarried to Samuel Benge in 1869. She is buried in Quakertown Cemetery with her mother Anna and more than likely her father is buried there also in an unmarked grave. Brother of George H Battershaw buried in Kent County, Michigan. Sister is Ida Margaret Battershall married Lewis Arnold. She is alleged to have died in 1897 in Michigan. Pending research. -------------------------- On 4 July 1871 Eugene married Lucinda Thomas in Calhoun County, Michigan. Lucinda died 20 April 1875 in Eaton County, Michigan of inflammation of the bowels. She was the daughter of George Thomas and Nancy Wellman. They were the parents of Minnie Grace, b. 11 Oct 1873; Hiram Battershaw b. abt. 1875. Hiram was raised by his maternal grandparents after the death of Lucinda. Lucinda is buried in Perry Cemetery in Eaton County, Michigan with the last name of Battershaw. Hiram Battershaw is mentioned in the Detroit Free Press on 31 October 1895 connected to an incident in Charlotte, Michigan. He was with a friend and they were residents of Brookfield, Michigan. On 2 December 1875 Eugene married Mary Gallagher Williams in Jackson County, Michigan. Mary was the daughter of Henry Williams and Elizabeth Hoffman. They were the parents of Etta May "Nettie" b. 1873 (paternity questioned-born out of wedlock and before Eugene's first wife died - may be a Williams child), Ida b.abt 1877, Minerva b.1878, Helen May (Nellie) b. 1883 & also 1876 (two birth dates), David and George Benjamin b. 1885. George took the Battleshaw name spelling. Sometime after their daughter Ida died from meningitis, Mary and Eugene were divorced. Mary's parents raised her son George. Mary abandoned her daughter Minerva at the county poor house, and moved with her daughter Helen to Pennsylvania. Mary was living in Hazelton PA and is documented as Helen's mother. Mary gave consent for Helen to marry Thomas Clifford in July 1900. Helen married again to John Dennis, who was 25 years older than her. Etta was living in Indiana and married there. In 1896 Eugene married Etta May Sowles and they were the parents of Fred and Walter. Eugene and Etta were divorced. On 16 January 1906 Eugene married the widow Alsina Levan (née Swan) Thomas in Eaton County, Michigan; they were divorced. Eugene is already divorced by 1910 and is on the 1910 census in Schoolcraft Michigan, living with his brother George. Alsina is still Mrs. Battershaw and was admitted to the Insane Asylum in Kalamazoo for several years, on and off. 1910, 1911, 1912 For an extended period of time Eugene was arrested, found guilty and incarcerated for a series of crimes including larceny. Other crimes he was found not guilty. Eugene died in 1929 in the County Home in Hillsdale County Michigan and nothing was known about him at the time of his death.
