Daughter of Eugene Battershaw/Battleshaw and Mary Williams. Appears to have been born out of wedlock and may not be the biological daughter of Battershaw. Etta was born before Eugene's first wife died. That explains why she was raised by her maternal grandparents. Went by the maiden name of Lowes, Loss or Laus which was the name of her mother Mary's second husband, George Laus. Etta also used the maiden name of her stepfather; Battleshaw Etta was abandoned by her mother Mary and was raised by her grandparents Henry Williams and Elizabeth Hoffman. She is not on the 1880 census with her parents or three sisters, Helen, Ida and Minerva. Helen and Ida have very close birthdays, with an 1877 birth year for Helen, but Helen's death certificate and subsequent documents give a much later birth year. Etta is married and in Indiana by 1900. Sister of Helen, Ida, Minerva aka Lula Belle, George Benjamin, David Married to Charles Sweet under the name of Etta May Loss on 7 December 1889 in Allen County, Indiana. Etta was 16 years old. They were the parents of Charles Benjamin, Martha Belle, Hazel, George Andrew and Grace LaVerne. Married to William W. Simmons 24 October 1910 in Indiana under the name of Etta May Loss Sweet. Mother Mary Williams and Father George Laus. Did mother remarry?
