Bio

Robert Henry Goodnight married (1) Esther Barbara Temple Payne in 1870. She was the widow of A.J. Payne, with whom she had a son Daniel Payne in Dec. 1861. She was a daughter of Allen A. S. Temple and Easter Hurley Temple. She was born in 1844 at Pittsburg Landing, Hardin County, Tennessee; she died in 1876 in Rains County, Texas. _____________________ Henry Goodnight and Esther Barbara Temple were the parents of three children: James Henry Goodnight, born 6 Nov 1871 in Rains County, Texas; John A. Goodnight, born 15 January 1873, in Rains County, Texas; and Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" Goodnight, born 7 Dec. 1875 in Rains County, Texas. JUN 1825 in Alabama _______________ Obituary dated: September 25, 1934 Uncle Henry GOODNIGHT succumbs to long illness; Funeral Wednesday "Uncle Henry" GOODNIGHT, pioneer retired farmer of Holland, died Tuesday morning at his home after a long illness. Mr. GOODNIGHT was born in Stone (error?) County, Arkansas, Dec. 3, 1846, and came to Bell County when a boy. He was a lifelong member of the Baptist church. He farmed a large section west of Holland until his retirement and removal to Holland several years ago. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday at the Baptist church at 2 p.m., with Rev. B.B. Blaylock of Temple, in charge. The pall bearers are selected from grandsons and sons-in-law. Survivers are four sons, Jim, Owen, and Elmer of Holland, and Charlie of Killeen; five daughters, Mrs. Lizzie GARRETT of Rising Star, Mrs. PORTER of Gatesville, Mrs. Minnie WHITSETT of Durant, Okla., Mrs. Mrs. Nettie CHAFFIN of Belton; 31 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
