Daily Local News Wednesday, March 11, 2009 William R. Wells, 86, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 8, 2009. He was living with his daughter and son-in-law in Ashland, Va. He was born in Big Stone Gap, Va., on June 13, 1922, to the late Emerson and Sarah Wells. William served courageously in the U.S. Army in World War II in active combat in the South Pacific Theater from 1942 through 1945. On his return, he was united in marriage to Anna Lee Barry, and they settled in Landenberg for 60 years. Mr. Wells worked for General Motors at its Delaware plant until his retirement, at which time he enjoyed small business ventures, his gardening, and his grandchildren. Mr. Wells is survived by his daughter and her husband, Myra and Hugh Conway of Ashland, Va.; his son, Mark Wells and his wife, Carol, of Hockessin, Del.; his son, Emerson Wells and his wife, Brenda, of Landenberg; and son, William R Wells Jr. Five grandchildren also survived Mr. Wells: Mark William Wells, Michael David Wells, Sara Marie Wells, Jennifer Marcozzi and Monica Washburn. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren. Two sisters and a brother survive Mr. Wells: Margaret Roat, Stella Tice and Guy Wells. He is further survived by nieces, nephews and many friends. He and his late wife attended the Calvary Baptist Church in Avondale. He was a member of the VFW of Fair Hill, Md., and a member of the American Legion of Kennett Square. Viewing and funeral services for William Wells will be held at 8:30 a.m. with the service starting at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, at the Calvary Baptist Church on Ellicott Road in Avondale, where Pastor John Burroughs will speak, as well as Chaplain Douglas Caleb of the VFW Post 7687 Chesapeake City, Md., accompanied by a military honor guard at the church, and a second military honor guard will provide the service at the cemetery for the graveside service. Burial will be in Philadelphia Memorial Park, Frazer. Arrangements are being handled by the Kuzo & Grieco Funeral Home, Kennett Square.
