Bio

Leona Hurst Anderson, 86, of Riverside, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2006, at the Willows Assisted Living Center in Blackfoot. She was born Dec. 23, 1919, in Woodville, Idaho, the oldest of 12 children born to Winfield and Arvella Thorne Hurst. As a youth, Leona lived in Zurich, Mont., where she attended grade school. In 1932 the family moved to Declo, Idaho, where Leona completed high school. After graduation, Leona was employed at Gillette's Grocery Store and Post Office. On Jan. 7, 1942, she married Donald Neils Anderson in the Salt Lake Temple. They farmed and lived their entire married life in the Riverside/Thomas area where they raised their family of nine children. Donald preceded Leona in death on Sept. 25, 1998. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she served faithfully in the Primary, Relief Society and as ward chorister. She was also a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. Leona drove school bus and was a cook for the Snake River School District. She enjoyed attending the temple, singing in the ward choir, giving service to others, and cooking excellent meals for family gatherings. She especially enjoyed visiting with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Much of her time was spent gardening, harvesting and canning. She is survived by children, Arvella (John) Jenkins of Declo, Idaho, Neils (Susan) Anderson, of Blackfoot, Idaho, Evelyn (Dennis) Hansen of Las Vegas, Nev., Sylvia (Steve) Crockett of Bellingham, Wash., Delia (Thomas) Christensen of Mashantucket, Conn., Robert (Robyn) Anderson of Blackfoot, Idaho, Dorothy (Curtis) Alva of Lake Park, Fla., Winfield (Charlyn) Anderson of Blackfoot, Idaho, Mary Anne (Mark) Wiseman of Bountiful, Utah; brothers, Arvel (Geraldine) Hurst of Visalia, Calif., Norman (Joy) Hurst of Declo, Idaho, Archie (Kaye) Hurst of Bountiful, Utah, Earl (Lottie) Hurst of Declo, Idaho, and LaMar (JoAnn) Hurst of Burley, Idaho; sisters, Arlene (Jay) Cheever of Roy, Utah, and Belva Henscheid of Rock Springs, Wyom.; sisters-in-law, Irene A. Hurst, of Heyburn, Idaho, and Utahna Hurst of Declo, Idah; 49 grandchildren and 62 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Leo, Harold, Floyd, and Vernal; a brother-in-law, Leo Henscheid, and a sister-in-law, Irene S. Hurst. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, 2006, at the Blackfoot West LDS Stake Center. The family will meet with friends on Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hawker Funeral Home, 132 S. Shilling Ave., and for one hour prior to the service at the church.
