Former Lawrence area resident, Clara R. (Skalka) Janda, 71, Grand Island, died Thursday at her home. Services were at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Grand Island, with the Rev. Martin Egging officiating. Burial was in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Janda was bom March 12, 1924, to Anton and Julia (Karmazin) Skalka in Hastings. She was the second of three children. She grew up on a farm north of Deweese. She attended country school and attended high school at Deweese. She earned a teaching certificate at Kearney State College. She taught at a country school north of Fairfield for two years and in the elementary school in Deweese for three years. On Aug. 8, 1946, she married Edward Janda of Lawrence. They operated a dairy farm near Lawrence and a service station. On Aug. 8, 1970, they moved to Grand Island where they operated a tire store until 1993. She was a member of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and its Altar Society. Survivors are her husband; one son, David, Grand Island; four daughters, Mary Shelton, Beatrice, Linda Goodman, Geneva, Alice Grosbach, Omaha and Leona Partington, Grand Island; one sister, Agnes Meininger, Scottsdale, Ariz.; and seven grandchildren.
