CANADIAN - Elizabeth Ann Baxter, 77, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009, in Wellington. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in Edith Ford Memorial Cemetery with Rick Timmons officiating. Arrangements are by Hughs Funeral Home of Canadian. Elizabeth was born Feb. 21, 1931, in Wheeler County to the late C.E. Childress and Etta Lee Rankin Childress. She attended schools in Canadian. She married Floyd E. Baxter on Aug. 1, 1957, in Clovis, N.M. He preceded her in death on March 7, 2002. Elizabeth worked as a dietitian for Canadian Independent School District for 18 years. She was an avid bowler. She bowled in tournaments as far away as Las Vegas and New York City. She and her family also were involved in rodeos for many years. She was a lifelong resident of Canadian and a member of First Baptist Church. She also was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Lynn Martin; two brothers, J.R. Childress and Winaford Childress; and a sister, Juanita Sumerall. Survivors include a son, Shaffer Baxter and wife Susie of Canadian; four grandchildren, Matt Martin and wife Karen of San Antonio and Heather Helms and husband Cody, Shawn Baxter and Jason Martin, all of Canadian; and two great-grandchildren, Kalee and Abby Helms, both of Canadian.
