James Darrell 'Jimmie' Shoemaker (October 08, 1939 ~ November 11, 2008) 8 October 1939 – 11 November 2008 *** PHOTO Jimmie Darrell Shoemaker GALENA, Kan. — Jimmie Darrell Shoemaker, age 69, 1113 N. Cleary, went to be with the Lord at 4:45 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008, at St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin, Mo., following an illness. Darrell was born Oct. 8, 1939, in Galena. His parents were William G. [Grover] and Fay Della (LaTurner) Shoemaker. He had lived his lifetime in Galena. Before he retired he was self-employed as an auto mechanic, specializing in restoring old cars. He took an interest in the business of the city during the last six years. For the past four years, he served as a councilman in the City of Galena. He was a member of the recently formed Mining Task Force in Galena. In his spare time, he continued to work on old cars. He loved spending time with his grandchildren. Darrell was married to Kathryn Marie Walker on Dec. 20, 1958, in Miami, Okla. She preceded him in death Oct. 14, 1979. Surviving is his companion of several years, [Roberta] Bertie [(Ashlock)] Wammack, of the home; one son, Darrell Leon Shoemaker and wife, Susie, Galena; three stepsons, Danny Wammack, Carl Junction, Mo., Leon Wammack, Galena, and Willie Wammack, Galena; one stepdaughter, Delcina LaTumer, Galena; one brother, David L. Shoemaker, Galena; two sisters, Eva Pfiffer, New Braunfels, Texas, and [June] Darlene Sturgis, Orange Park, Fla.; 19 grandchildren: several great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by one son, Billy W. Shoemaker; one daughter, Terri Faye Shoemaker; and one great-granddaughter, Aubrey Chevelle Shoemaker. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at Oak Hill Cemetery, Galena. Pastor Jeff Martin will officiate. Pallbearers will be officers in the Galena Police Department. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena. Contributions in Darrell's honor may be made to the Shoemaker family in care of the funeral home.
