Bio
August came to America in 1892, sending for his family the next year, when he had found work and a place to live. He died of stomach cancer 2 weeks before his 46th birthday. There was a small death notice in the "Butler County Press" as follows: The funeral of Aug Herms, who died last Thursday morning at his home southwest of Brainard, occurred Friday afternoon at the Ware church under the auspices of the MWA Lodge of Ware, of which order he was a member in good standing and carried a $2000 policy. Interment was made in the Ware Cemetery. The funeral was largely attended. The bereaved family have the sympathy of the entire community in this their hour of sorrow.

In Loving Memory of Gottfried Herms. Born in Germany--September 16, 1828. Died January 29, 1914. Aged 85 yrs. 7 mos. 18 days. Dearest Grandfather, thou has left us, And your loss we deeply feel. But this God that has bereft us, He can all our sorrows feel."
