Your mother was born October 18, 1822 in the State of New Jersey; emigrated to Matagorda County, Texas, in the year 1839; was married to your father in 1852 in Matagorda, in which place your brother William was born on the 13th of August 1853 after which they moved to Bastrop where your sister Annie was born March 8, 1856 ; Lorenzo, August 11, 1857; yourself, John, March 19,1859; Edwin, January 8, l861, who died soon after, just before, the War. Your father volunteered as a private and was in the command of Genl. Lee up to the time of the Gettysburg raid after which we never heard of or from him and supposed he was killed, although his name was not published amongst the killed or missing. Your mother was taken sick and died July 8, 1862 in the city of Bastrop, after which your brother and sister were removed to your grandpa's in Matagorda, in August just before the yellow fever in that place."
