DEBORAH LAYTON, daughter of WILLIAM LAYTON and SARAH Unknown was born on 18 Oct 1822 in Woodbridge, Middlesex Co., NJ. Deborah married GEORGE WELLINGTON WALKER Pvt. CSA on 23 Sep 1852 in Matagorda, Matagorda Co., TX. George was born about 1819 in MO. Deborah died on 8 Jul 1862 in Bastrop, Bastrop Co., TX. She was probably buried in Fairview Cem., Bastrop, Bastrop Co., TX. George died as a P.O.W. on 5 Dec 1863 in Fed. hosp. (Middle Brook) near Knoxville,Knox Co.,TN. They had the following children: William P WALKER was born on 18 Aug 1853 in Matagorda Co.,TX. Annie B WALKER was born on 8 Mar 1856 in Bastrop,Bastrop Co.,TX. Lorenso Dow WALKER was born on 11 Aug 1857. He died on 9 Oct 1935. Dr. JOHN HENRY WALKER was born on 19 Mar 1859. He died on 31 Aug 1899. Edwin WALKER was born on 8 Jan 1861 in Bastrop,Bastrop Co.,TX. He died right before the Civil War in Bastrop Co.,TX. ******************************* In a letter from Deborah's brother, Fletcher, to Deborah's son, John Henry Walker, dated Sep. 4, 1878: "You ask for your parents history. Your mother was born October 18, 1822 in the State of New Jersey; emigrated to Matagorda County, Texas, in the year 1839; was married to your father in 1852 in Matagorda, in which place your brother William was born on the 13th of August 1853 after which they moved to Bastrop where your sister Annie was born March 8, 1856 ; Lorenzo, August 11, 1857; yourself, John, March 19,1859; Edwin, January 8, l861, who died soon after, just before, the War. Your father volunteered as a private, enlisted Bastrop, Tex., Apr. 5, 1862 WALKER, G. W. - wounded Sept. 19,1863 then captured becoming a POW at the battle of Chickamauga ,on Dec. 1, 1863: Died at Fed. hosp. (Middle Brook) near Knoxville, Dec. 5, 1863 ,buried at Bethel Confederate Cemetery After the Chickamauga Battle we never heard of or from him and supposed he was killed, although his name was not published amongst the killed or missing. Your mother was taken sick and died July 8, 1862 in the city of Bastrop, after which your brother and sister were removed to your grandpa's in Matagorda, in August just before the yellow fever in that, place."
