Doris Ann (Jalufka) Usener, of Fredericksburg, Texas, passed away on Tuesday, Sep. 10, 2024 at the age of 89 years. Doris was born on Mar. 6, 1935, in Hallettsville, TX, the daughter of Juluis and Mary (Pustejovsky) Jalufka. She married Atley Otto Usener, of Fredericksburg, TX, on Aug. 11, 1964 at Christ Lutheran Church in Corpus Christi, TX. Doris had a lifelong passion for serving Jesus Christ, music, and animals. After graduating from Hallettsville High School, she earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Southwest Texas State Teachers College in San Marcos. With a lifetime all-grades Texas Teacher Certificate for music in hand, Doris came to Fredericksburg and spent her first night at the Nimitz Hotel. She taught music in the Fredericksburg Independent School District for 9 years. Her instrument specialties were piano and clarinet, and the Lord gifted her with an angelic voice that made her a precious addition to any choir. At Holy Ghost Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg, she organized a hugely successful fundraising effort to purchase a pipe organ to enhance the worship experience there. After her son Lars Finn and daughter Joy Lyn were born, Doris transitioned to substitute teaching in music and special education, and she began a decades-long devotion to solo singing and many Gillespie County choirs. She brought glory to God above and brightness into the hearts of many thousands of people across the Hill Country. Doris also served as an Assistant Den Mother in Fredericksburg's Boy Scouts and a Troop Leader for Fredericksburg's Girl Scouts. In her later years, she devoted hundreds of hours to Hill Country Hospice, delivering flowers and reading and playing games with local patients. She was also awarded 1999 Volunteer of the Year at Holy Ghost. Her love of music never wavered. She composed many songs, some of which are still played at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fredericksburg. She also had a unique gift for transposing music to a key fitting a singer's age group and musical abilities. During her years with St. Mary's, she performed piano music for an entire Christmas season when all three organists were unable; her only demand was that someone bring the piano to the main floor so she could get to it! Doris is survived by her daughter and spouse, Joy and James Clark of Las Vegas, NV, sister in-law and spouse, Vernell (Usener) and Harvey Ellebracht of Fredericksburg, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was proceeded in death by her husband Atley, son Lars, and her siblings Lawrence Jalufka, Lou Hradecky, Marabel Polasek, and Virginia Petter. A funeral service will be held Thursday, Sep. 19 at 1 p.m. at Holy Ghost Lutheran Church, with visitation at 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery.
