Anchorage Daily News November 5, 1999 Mary Barbara Steele, 97, died Nov. 1, 1999, at Providence Extended Care Center. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Benedict's Parish, with the Rev. Alfred Giebel officiating. Burial was at Angelus Memorial Park. Mrs. Steele was born Sept. 6, 1902, in Wahoo, Neb., the fourth of 11 children born to John Vincent and Barbara Ann (Weiss) Leitgeb. On March 31, 1921, she married Tracie A. Lungershausen. They had three children. During World War II, she worked in the bomb-loading plant at Mead, Neb., making TNT. She and her first husband later divorced. In 1943, she married Richard O. Steele and moved to Phoenix, Ariz., where she first worked as a production worker, then as an inspector in the aluminum plant making tubing for war planes. During the late 1940s, the family moved to Culver City, Calif., where Mr. Steele died in 1959. The following year, Mrs. Steele moved to Anchorage at the invitation of her daughter and son-in-law. She spent the next 39 years living in the family home in Anchorage. Mrs. Steele was a volunteer for the Multiple Sclerosis Society during the early 1980s and is remembered for her active role as ''prize coordinator'' for the Sunday Senior Drop-In at the Anchorage Senior Center. Survivors include one daughter, Arlene Haggstrom of Anchorage; son and daughter-in-law, Eugene and DeLaine Lungershausen of Lincoln, Neb.; stepson, Warren Steele of Seattle; sister, Jennie Filbrandt of Wahoo; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. Her son John Lungershausen, a naval aviator, was lost at sea during World War II. Memorial donations should be sent to the charity of the donor's choice.
