Longtime Anchorage resident Arlene Haggstrom, 83, died peacefully July 15, 2009, in Anchorage. A funeral Mass will be held at noon Tuesday at St. Benedict's Catholic Church, followed by a gathering of friends at the family home. Arlene was born April 8, 1926, in Wahoo, NB to Tracie and Mary Lungershausen. After high school, she met Melvin Haggstrom, a tall, gangly farm boy from Nebraska who loved to dance to polkas. One dance led to another and they were married Dec 16, 1944, at Williams Field, AZ. After the war, the newlyweds moved to Los Angeles, where sons Dale and Daryl were born. Deciding that it was not a good place to raise children, Mel drove the Alaska Highway, got a job with Inlet Motors Studebaker and sent for the family. Arlene and the boys arrived in 1951 after passage to Seward on the Alaska steamship Baranof. The first true Alaskan in the family arrived when daughter Elsa was born in Anchorage. They bought land in Hanson Acres, five miles south of the city off Campbell Creek Road, and lived the remainder of their lives at the home they built there. The family enjoyed trips to the Kenai to catch salmon, to Portage to net hooligan and to Eureka to hunt game. Arlene masterfully handled the logistics of feeding, clothing and tending the children on these sometimes, primitive excursions into the wilds – and loved it. In 1964, Arlene went to work for the Plumbers and Steamfitters, managing their Health and Welfare. She retired in 1991. She loved her garden, although all the children have less-than-happy memories of weeding it. Arlene's survivors include Dale and his wife Vita, and their children Matt Jason and Colleen; Daryl and wife Karen, and Daryl's daughter Bristol and Karen's children Tom and wife Michelle and Eric; daughter Elsa and husband Mike and children Brian and Sean; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and brothers. Arlene was a cancer survivor. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Cancer Society or Providence Alaska medical Center. Arrangements are with Kehl's Funeral Home. Contributor: Angelus Memorial Park Cemetery (49025107)
