Magdalen "Maggie" (Sulak) Benys, 84, passed away peacefully on August 29, 2023, at PAM Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Corpus Christi after a brief illness. She was the beloved wife of more than 60 years to Deacon Victor Joe Benys, Jr. In her final days, she was surrounded by all five of her children. Maggie, the oldest of four siblings, was born in the Czech community of West, Texas, and grew up speaking Czech until age 8. The family later moved to Corpus Christi, where Maggie spent the rest of her life. She met her high school sweetheart and future husband, Vic, while attending Incarnate Word Academy, where she graduated in 1957. Throughout her life, Maggie was a devout Catholic, and deeply moved by a desire to share her faith with others. She spent hours in prayer, reading the Bible, and praying the rosary. She and Vic were leaders in their church, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, where they led the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, and Maggie became known as a source of warmth and welcome to the community. Besides her faith, Maggie's great love was family. She delighted in cooking big meals to bring everyone together around her table, always with extra chairs for friends and neighbors. She was a proud grandma, filling her time with her beloved grandchildren with her nurturing presence, huge hugs and precious words. She loved oil painting, gardening, collecting eclectic pitchers, the Dallas Cowboys, the color red, and, like every proud Texan, Whataburger…...but most of all, she loved taking care of others. Maggie is survived by her husband, Vic, and her five children and their families: Victor Benys III (Denise), Markus Benys (Melissa), Madeline Freberg (Michael), Matthew Benys (Laura) and Melinda Thomas (Aaron). She also leaves behind nine grandchildren, Malcolm Freberg, Victor Benys IV, Miles Freberg, Joshua Benys, Robert Benys, Andrew Benys (Savannah), Sarah Benys, Simone Thomas and Mae Thomas; as well as great-grandson Jeremiah; siblings Erwin Sulak, Rita Carter and James Sulak; and numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends. She is preceded in death by great-grandson Ambroise. Visitation hours will begin at 11:30 AM with a Rosary beginning at 12:30 PM on Saturday, September 2, 2023, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 1 PM. A committal service will begin at 2:30 PM at Seaside Memorial Park followed by a reception at the church hall. Maxwell P. Dunne Funeral Service, Corpus Christi, Texas
