Bio

Deacon Victor Joe Benys Jr., 85, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2023, at Harbor Hospice in Portland, Texas. He joins his beloved wife of more than 60 years, Magdalen "Maggie" Benys, who passed away three weeks prior and has been saving his spot in heaven. With Deacon Vic's booming voice, big personality, and love of the spotlight, he is sure to make an entrance. The oldest of four siblings, Vic grew up on his family's ranch in Corpus Christi, working cattle with his father and brothers. When he enlisted in the U.S. Marines, his commanders quickly spotted his talent with horses, and put him in charge of running the cavalry stables. His military service took him to Okinawa, Japan. When he returned home, he turned his attention to engineering. He had a brilliant mind for problem-solving and building, and was a self-taught special projects engineer for Coastal Refinery in Corpus Christi for more than 30 years. He applied his ingenuity at home too, building inventions like the expandable table where he and Maggie gathered with their kids, grandkids, friends and neighbors for meals and joke-telling. The train joke was his specialty. As a deacon for Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Deacon Vic touched the lives of hundreds of families in the community. He took immense pride and joy in being a deacon, and was a beloved leader in the church. He was passionate about sharing his faith with others, and studying it — he knew the Catechism and Bible backward and forward. He and Maggie led the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, among many other contributions. Vic was a talented woodcarver and sculptor, and played a rollicking version of "You Are My Sunshine" on the harmonica. He loved fishing, the color yellow, the Dallas Cowboys, and any movie with a horse in it, especially John Wayne films. His hugs were as big as his personality. Deacon Vic is survived by his five children and their families: Victor Benys III (Denise), Markus Benys (Melissa), Madeline Freberg (Michael), Matthew Benys (Laura) and Melinda Thomas (Aaron). He also leaves behind nine grandchildren, Malcolm Freberg, Victor Benys IV, Miles Freberg, Joshua Benys, Robert Benys, Andrew Benys (Savannah), Sarah Benys, Simone Thomas and Mae Thomas; as well as great-grandson Jeremiah and numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends. He is preceded in death by parents Victor Joe Benys, Sr. and Willie Mae Benys; wife Maggie; siblings Sherman Otto Benys Sr., William Lynn Benys and Mary Kaye Fuller; and great-grandson Ambroise. A gathering will begin at 11:30 am with a Rosary beginning at 12:30 pm followed by a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, October 7, 2023, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. A committal service will begin at 2:30 pm at Seaside Memorial Park, followed by a reception back at the church.
