Barney R. Watson was born 21 Sep 1895 at Winnsboro, Wood County, Texas. He was the son of Benjamin Franklin Watson, Sr., and Dallas (Brown) Watson. Barney grew up in Wood County. After the 1910 U.S. Census collection, the family moved to the Tri-State (MO, KS, OK) mining district. In June of 1917 (draft registration), Barney lived in Jasper County, Missouri, where he worked in the mining industry. Barney served in the U.S. Army during World War I: Private, Medical Department, 5th Field Signal Battalion. He died from disease in 1918, while overseas. The newspaper death notice reported his residence as Eminence, Missouri, and his next-of-kin as Mrs. Loula Watson. Barney's body was transported to the U.S. in 1921, leaving port from Cherbourg, France, on May 1st. The body was transported from New Jersey to Eminence, Shannon County, Missouri, via train, arriving on 15 Jun 1921. Barney's body was interred in the final resting place in the Bethany Chapel Cemetery, Eminence, Missouri, on Thursday, 16 Jun 1921. The funeral oration was delivered by Rev. Batton and Prof. Sears had charge of singing. The funeral was under the direction of ex-soldiers present, who acted as pall bearers and escort. Barney was survived by his parents; six brothers, J. Sylvester "Vester", Wilburn H. "Buck", Monjoe "Joe", Benjamin F. "Ben", Earmon H., and Charles Henry Watson; and one sister, Bessie "Lela" Watson Woodin. His family lived in the Picher, Oklahoma/Treece, Kansas area. *Barney's brother, Charles Henry Watson, was laid to rest in the Bethany Chapel Cemetery upon his death in 1945. Charles' wife was Mabel Lee Johnson of Eminence, Missouri.
