JOHN WENTRCEK COUNTY PIONEER IS BURIED TODAY Funeral services for John Wentrcek who passed away December 12 were held this morning from the family residence near Granger at 10 o'clock followed by services at 11 from the Czech-Moravian Brethren Church with the Reverand Joseph Barton officiating. Interment was in the old Machu Cemetery and Sullivan funeral Home was in charge. Mr. Wentrcek was born February 22, 1865 in Czechoslovakia and came to the United States in 1872. The family settled first in Austin County but four years later moved to Williamson County to the Rices Crossing Community. In 1989 they moved to Granger and there Mr. Wentrcek resided until his death. On August 9, 1883 he was married to Miss Mary Simek also of Williamson County. To this union were born seven children all of whom survive. Emil Wentrcek of Granger, Mrs. Frank Martinets of Thorndale, Mrs. Emil Janak of Granger, Ed C. Wentrcek of Davilla, Mrs. Charlie Mekolik of Taylor, Mrs. Jerry Leshikar of Granger and John A. Wentrcek of San Antonio. Also surviving are 17 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He lived on the old home place five miles east of Granger from 1889 to 1910 when he retired. At that time he moved 12 miles east of Granger where he lived until his death. When Mr. Wentrcek first came to Williamson County 68 years ago, this area was mostly wilderness and he at that time plowed with a yoke of oxen. Mr. Wentrcek was helpful in the building of the community, assisting in the organization of several Czech lodges and at one time was an active member of the Woodmen of the World Lodge. He helped organize and build the first Czech-Moravian Brethren Church in Granger an edifice which still is standing. [Taylor Daily Press December 15, 1944.]
