Bio

Emillio Simonetti (3/9/1896-10/3/1977) was the son of Felice Simonetti(1861-1865? - 1940s) and his wife Giovanna (1866-70? - 2/16/1938). He was a relatively short but powerfully built man with extremely strong hands. He got that strength from his profession which was a butcher. He lived his early years at 402 Metropolitan Avenue in Brooklyn which was close to the Brooklyn Navy Yard. He was a semi-professional boxer as a young man. He was drafted in 1918 into the United State Army and was in the Company E of the 114th Infantry. He was sent to France and fought in the final battle of the war, the Battle of the Meuse Argonne. He was gravely wounded and gassed twice in the battle and was awarded 2 purple hearts. The following article appeared in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle newspaper on Monday, November 25, 1918: " Pvt. Emillo Simonetti of 402 Metropolitan Avenue who was wounded during the big drive, has written his parents that he was hit in the back with a machine gun bullet which came out of his right hip., but that no operation was necessary. He expected to stay in the hospital a few months. The letter was written on October 18, 1918." He returned from the war and went to work as a butcher. He married Filomena Brando and bought a house at 59-27 59th Road, Maspeth, Queens, NY. They had 3 sons; Felix, Cono and William. He opened a butcher shop in Maspeth, NY which stayed in business until the 1960's. He had a stroke in the early 1970's and went to the VA hospital at Fort Hamilton, Brooklyn, NY. He died on October 3, 1977.
