James was the son of Rev. Alexander S. and Polly (Wright) Gunn. His grandparents were the cemetery's founders James and Ursula (Sweeney) Gunn, and John and Margaret (Mackey) Wright. He married Ann Eliza Sims 22 August 1858 in Macoupin County, Illinois. Their children were: Alva, who married Emma Shryer; Olly; Eva J.; Mary Laura, known as "Lulu", who married her father's first cousin Bernard W. Gunn; and James D. Gunn. James was a Private in Company H, 58th Illinois Infantry during the Civil War. Three of his children along with his parents, grandparents, and many other relatives are buried in this cemetery. His wife Ann Eliza and their oldest son, Alva, are buried in Jacksonville East Cemetery, in Jacksonville, Illinois.
