Alfred J. Cervenka Sr., 76, beloved husband, father grandfather, brother, nephew, uncle and friend, died April 5, 2004, after a brief illness. Alfred was born Nov. 11, 1927 to William and Mary (Janak) Cervenka. He grew up on a farm west of Granger and attended S.S. Cyril & Methodius Catholic School and Granger High School. He started farming with his father at an early age. On Oct. 12, 1954, he married Martha Hajda at S.S. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church. His loving wife of 50 years survives him. Other survivors include his children, Alfred Cervenka, Jr. and wife Sharon, James Cervenka and wife Laurie; daughter Joyce and husband John Merrill; grandchildren, Jamie Cervenka, Kayla Cervenka, McKenzie Cervenka and Lukas and Marissa Merrill; sisters, Otilie Lindemann of Johnson City, Delores Volek of Taylor; sisters-in-law, Sally Cervenka, Mary Repa and Agnes Bohac; brother-in-law, V.J. Hajda and wife Margie, Louis Hajda and wife Loretta, all of Granger. In his early years, Alfred acquired a love for business. While farming with his father, he worked at Dusek's Grocery on weekends. In 1968, when Mazoch Lumber Company was for sale, he and his wife decided to go into the lumber business. He supplied building materials for many of the homes in the area, managing Granger Lumber Company for 35 years. He was an active member of S.S. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church and a fourth degree member of the Granger Knights of Columbus. Also, he was a member of the Granger K.J.T. He served as a Eucharistic Minister for over 20 years and was one of the original members and visited many homebound parishioners, making many friends. He was a member of the S.S. Cyril & Methodius School board and supported the Catholic School for many years. He served as caretaker of Calvary Cemetery for over 40 years, establishing the perpetual care and making many improvements. In his early years, he loved to fish and to hunt. He enjoyed very much visiting with his customers at the lumberyard. He dearly loved to see and visit with his grandchildren and couldn't wait for them to come again. Alfred was a person with a kind and loving heart and will be missed by many. Rosary will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Condra Funeral Home, Taylor. Funeral Mass will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, at S.S. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church, Granger, with the Rev. Isidore Ndagizimana, Msgr. John Frezelle and Msgr Arthur Michalka officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Granger. Pallbearers will be Richard Cervenka, Kenneth Cervenka, Larry Cervenka, Frank Matula, Johnny Machu, Fred Lindeman, Louis Repa and Wesley Hajda. Memorial contributions may be made to S.S.
