Although Mrs. Ellen Philistia Cyphert, wife of the late Anthony R. Cyphert, has been ill for the last couple years or more at their home in Clarion, yet her death Wednesday morning, August 1, 1928, at 9:45 a.m. proved to be a shock to many of our people. Mrs. Cyphert was a long but patient sufferer. She possessed wonderful courage and fortitude and faced her illness and all other ills and misfortunes with great composure because she was a true Christian and she was supported by the grace which she found to be sufficient for every day and trial. Her decline in health was slow at first, but she was patient and did not complain. Recently her children and friends realized that the end would not be long delayed, but she was quietly resigned and ready to exchange her earthly home for that beyond and when the last call came her spirit quietly departed with the angel of light. Mrs. Cyphert was born at Williamsburg, three miles south of Clarion, on October 24, 1846, the daughter of Wm. J. and Eliza (Thomas) Lewis. There she grew to womanhood and on Christmas Day, December 25, 1867, she was united in marriage with Anthony R. Cyphert, who preceded her in death many years ago. She is survived by the following family: Herbert H. Cyphert, Mrs. Effie Pearl, wife of James Runyan; B. O. Cyphert, and Mrs. Lydia, wife of W. C. Williams, all of Clarion; Clara Gertrude, wife of Frank T. Brown, Pittsburgh; Anna E., wife of A. A. Turner, Clearfield, and Anthony R. Cyphert, Oil City. Two children are deceased Grace Virginia Campbell, wife of Alonzo Campbell and Wm. L. Cyphert, both of Clarion. She is also survived by 45 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren, and the following sisters: Anna E. Lewis, Williamsburg; Mrs. Alice Foster, Beaver Falls; Mrs. Laura Reddinger, Pittsburgh, and Mrs. W. J. Rea, Buffalo, N. Y. Mrs. Cyphert was a charter member of the First Baptist Church of Clarion, was a steadfast adherent, a reverent and devoted attendant as long as she had strength, and was a faithful and true disciple of the Master. Her funeral services will be held in Baptist Church, Saturday afternoon, Aug. 4th, at 2:30 p.m. being conducted by her pastor, the Rev. A. E. Douglass and Dr. John Ballentine. The interment will be made in the Clarion cemetery. Obituaries from the Clarion Democrat, 1928, 1929, 1930. Pg 32. Compiled by Sally Jordan Reed
