Private, Company A, 8th (Wade's) Regiment, Confederate Cavalry James M Chaney was enlisted by Lt. J. S. Lanier on August 13, 1861, in Decatur, Alabama, for 1 year. He was a private in Company A, 2nd Regiment Mississippi and Alabama Cavalry, formerly Capt. Bowie's Company, Alabama Cavalry. The 8th (Wade's) Regiment, Confederate Cavalry was formed in May 1862. James Cheney was captured at Middleton on January 31, 1863, and sent to City Point, James River, on February 11, 1863. He was on a roll of prisoners of war sent to Fortress Monroe, Virginia, for exchange by an order dated February 15, 1863. Pvt. James M. Chaney was Regimental teamster beginning August 13, 1862, and on special duty as a driver beginning March 1, 1863. In 1864 he was teamster with the supply train of the Tennessee army. He was captured at Talladega, Alabama, on April 22, 1865, on an expedition into Alabama and Georgia. His older brother, Thomas W. Chaney, also served as a private in Company A.
