Bio
Thaddeus began life as a farmer in VT. He married Sarah Siple in 1839 in Ferrisburg VT. The family lived in Chittenden VT in 1840, but William was also born in August of 1850 in Illinois, therefore the family moved from Chittenden VT to Illinois before 1850. Phoebe was born abt 1854 in MI, so sometime between 1851 and 1854 the family moved to Cass Co. Michigan By 1870 the family including Thaddeus and his sons Lafayette and William had moved from Michigan to Elsmore, Kansas. Since Oscar and Ira (Lafayette's sons) were both born in Michigan this move probably occurred between 1867 and 1869. The family then moved to Michigan, then Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, and finally settled in Gonzales, Texas. Thaddeus was a soldier in the Civil War. He served in Company D Unit 25 Michigan Infantry from Aug 1862 - Apr 1864. In 1883 he is on the Texas Small Counties 1883 Pensioners roll. He is listed as Thadeus S Cady, harwood Post Office, as receiving $12/mo, originating in 1867 for an injury to the abdomen. Thaddues died from a rattle snake bite at the age of 70. The obituary in the Gonzales Inquirer reads: "Tuesday morning Mr. Thaddeus CADY, an old gentleman about 70 years of age, accompanied by a little girl, went to the river bottom of Mr. S. S. BARBER to get a load of wood. While chopping wood he was bitten by a large rattlesnake on the calf of the leg. He killed the snake and cut off the rattles and gave them to the little girl and started to town. While going through a gate the wagon became fastened on a port and Mr. CADY in endeavoring to get out, fell to the ground overcome by the poison. The little girl ran to a house near by and secured assistance. Mr. CADY was brought to town in an unconscious condition and at 4:20 p.m. died from the effects of the bite. The snake had ten rattles. Mr. CADY was buried Wednesday evening. Several rattlesnakes had been killed previously in the bottom by men cutting wood. The fangs of the snake were driven through his pants and underclothing, and the wounds were about an inch and a half apart."
