Bio

Henry Peters Jr., son of Henry and Tolcke Catherine Dires Peters, was born at Weeping Water, Cass County, Nebraska on July 23, 1873. Henry's parents came to Rusco Township, Buffalo County in the spring of 1875. This farm, in the SE4 of Section 2 in Rusco Township, had earlier been preempted by Albert A. Morris. This farm is just across the South Loup River from the present day village of Pleasanton. His parents ran a "way station" for persons traveling on north and west through Pleasant Valley. Peter's Bridge was the only crossing of the South Loup River at this point. Henry resided on this old homestead with his Mother after the death of his father. Henry Peters and Ora Smith, daughter of Curtis and Mabel Pratt Smith, were married July 25, 1925. By the 1930 census, Henry and his wife Ora were living on and farming this land. PLEASANTON ON THE LOUP, pp. 308-309 No inquest is to be held in the case of Henry Peters, wealthy farmer living just south of Pleasanton, who ended his life on Saturday, by shooting. An investigation was made by County Attorney E. G. Reed and Sheriff William Flake and it was deemed unnecessary to hold an inquest. Peters, who was about 67(actually 59) years old, was sued for a divorce recently. On Saturday he came to Kearney to have a hearing on the alimony phase of this suit. He appeared extremely downcast during the course of his stay in Kearney and enroute home, making the trip to Pleasanton in the company of a friend. Arriving at the Peters place he asked his car driver to proceed to the home of an acquaintance and bring him down, as he wished to talk over some matters with him. Returning the two found that Henry had taken his own life. Kearney Daily Hub, Monday, June 13, 1932 Henry's funeral was held June 14, 1932 at 2:00 p.m. with R. A. Giles officiating. Pallbearers were R. B. Wort, August Gunst, James Hunter, John Klein, Rudolph Ritter, and A. H. Grammer.
