It was the final wish of both Charles Richard "Dick" Pate and Margaret June Tieche Pate that their ashes be co-mingled and scatter together. After Dick's death in 2012, their children followed their wishes so they are together forever.
Charles Richard "Dick" Pate ST. PAUL, Va. Charles Richard "Dick" Pate, 95, died Thursday, May 17, 2012, in Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol, Va., following a period of declining health. He was a long-time resident of St. Paul moving to the Grand Court in Bristol, Va. He was born in Coeburn, Va., on July 10, 1916; son of the late Richard Luster and Frances Folsen Greear Pate. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Margaret Tieche Pate; and his siblings, Bill Pate, Roxie Pate Hensley, Roger Pate, and Betty Pate Holbrook. An accountant by profession, he graduated from Coeburn High School and The McKinley School of Commerce of American University in Washington, D.C. During the depression, he wrote radio scripts for the WPA with Arthur Godfrey. Upon returning to Virginia, he worked as the Corporate Insurance Manager for Clinchfield Coal Company until 1967, when he founded C. R. Pate and Company in St. Paul. He went on to open offices in Pennington Gap and Wise. He was a member of the St. Paul/Dante Lions Club, a founder of the St. Paul Little League, and wrote and co-produced the Lions Club Minstrel Shows. He was a Kentucky Colonel and a former Chairman of the Wise County Draft Board. He is survived by three daughters, Becky Murrey and husband, Johnny of St. Paul, Judy Abbott of Wise, and Suzy Harrison and husband, Bob of St. Paul; four grandchildren, Kate Abbott Miller and husband, Mike of Abingdon, Va., Matt Harrison and wife, Anna of Charlottesville, Va., Meg Murrey Godsey and husband, Chap of Whitefish, Mo., and Mark Harrison and wife, Lara of St. Paul; and four great-grandchildren, Emma Harrison of Charlottesville, Clayton and Carter Godsey of Whitefish, and Olivia Harrison of St. Paul. The family expresses their deepest gratitude to the staff at the Grand Court in Bristol, his physician, Dr. Fred Greear, the office staff at Bristol Medical Associates, and to Mr. Pate's extraordinary caregivers, Ellen Hughes, Betty Venable, and Doris Davenport. At Mr. Pate's request, his body was cremated and a private family funeral and scattering of his ashes will occur at a later date. The family will receive friends and celebrate the life of Mr. Pate from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, May 19, 2012, at Castlewood Funeral Home, Castlewood. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the St. Paul High School Alumni Scholarship Fund, c/o Benny Crowder, P. O. Box 309, St. Paul, VA 24283. Mr. and Mrs. Pate opened their home to St. Paul High School students and friends after home football games and other occasions throughout the high school years of their daughters. The Pate house was a home-away- from home to countless SPHS students.
