Bio
George Anna was born in Cambridge, Dorcester County, Maryland, to George Lake and Mary Boyn Slocum Lake. She was one of ten known children: Harriet Maria, Miriam, Catherine, Clara, Julia Anna, Clementine Jackson, Gabriel Perry, Robert Pinkney, and Elizabeth. The family migrated down to Mississippi where George Anna married first one of her cousins, Henry Slocum Lake. With him, she had one son: Charles Henry Lake. She married next, James Monroe Newton and had one daughter, Augusta James Newton. She married last to Joseph Bell Tarpley, a doctor, while still in Mississippi (Yalobusha County), on 22 Jan 1846. With him, she had six more children: Robert Perry (28 Mar 1847), Joseph Alfred (11 July 1848), Mary Lucretia (6 Mar 1851), Sterling Lake (7 Apr 1853, my grt. grandfather), Anna Jenette (10 Apr 1854), and Ella Georgia (22 Sep 1855). Both her husband Joseph (Joe) and her oldest son, Charles, served during the the Civil War. In 1866, Collin County, Texas took a special census to recount its population after the war and this Tarpley family was found on this census. They remained in Plano, Collin County until about 1880 when they moved north to Bowie, Montague County, Texas. Here is where they remained and still are, buried in the Elmwood Cemetery. There are about two very worn and difficult to read pages of George Anna's family Bible in the Mississippi State Archives.
