Bio

Joseph Bell Tarpley was born to Sterling Tarpley and Lucretia Pettypool Tarpley in the Lebanon area of Wilson County, Tennessee. At an unknown time, he went with several of his brothers into Mississippi where he married Georgeanna Hull Lake Lake Newton on 22 Jan 1846. They had six children: Robert Perry (28 Mar 1847), Joseph Alfred (11 July 1848), Mary Lucretia (6 Mar 1851), Sterling Lake (7 Apr 1853, my grt. grandfather), Anna Jennette (10 Apr 1854), and Ella Georgia (22 Sep 1855). Both Joseph (Joe) and Georgeanna's oldest son, Charles, served during the the Civil War. In 1866, Collin County, Texas took a special census to recount its population after the war and this Tarpley family was found on this census. They remained in Plano, Collin County until about 1880 when they moved north to Bowie, Montague County, Texas. Here is where they remained and still are, buried in the Elmwood Cemetery. There are about two very worn and difficult to read pages of George Anna's family Bible in the Mississippi State Archives. If you have any other information or questions regarding this family, please contact me, Frances Miers Muller at [email protected] . George Anna has a separate Memorial Page here at Find A Grave at Elmwood Cemetery.
