SMITH, Mrs. Melissa (Oscar) of Thorndale. Age 81. Died 9/1/1971 (Tuesday) following an apparent heart attack. Services held (Wed.) in Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale. Burial in the family plot at the Lawrence Chapel Cemetery. Rev. George Doss of Rockdale officiated. Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. BORN Melissa Smith on 7/25/1890, daughter of the late M/M. Wash Smith, pioneer residents of the Shiloh Comm. Married on 10/16/1910 at Shiloh to Oscar Smith. She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church having united with that faith in early girlhood. A woman beloved by her family, her neighbors and numerous friends. Preceded in death by husband in June 1967; 2 sons, Wilmer and James; 5 sisters and 2 brothers. SURVIVORS: 3 sons, Nathan, Leonard, and Harvey Smith all of Thorndale; daughter, Mrs. Jesse Laughin of Robstown; sister, Mrs. Frankie Horacefield of Houston; 10 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
