Arlington, TX – Melvin Ruel Gilbert, 92, passed on thru the gates of heaven on Thursday, April 9, 2020, at Arlington Memorial hospital, following a brief illness. He leaves his companion Susan Tyner, his son, Cecil Gilbert, his daughter Angel McCullough, brother Carl Jack Gilbert, four grandchildren; and many friends. Born on Monday, April 11, 1927 in Denison, TX, and raised in Grandview, TX, the son of W. Asbury and Annie Gilbert, he was a lifelong resident of Arlington. After serving with the Army Air Corps during World War II, he stopped off in southern California to stay with an elder brother, where he married his first wife Anna Marie. They moved to Texas shortly after marriage. Melvin went to work for TEMCO aircraft manufacturing. After being laid off by the late 1950s, he began a new career as a mechanic for Bob Cooke Ford, then to service writer, manager service department, then on to auto/truck sales. Melvin returned to aircraft manufacturing with LTV Aerospace & Defense (now known as Lockheed Martin Missiles & Fire Control and Triumph – Vought Aircraft Division), where he retired as a Production Manager.
