Bio

Rosalia Svoboda was born in 1842 at House #1, Val, South Bohemia. At age 17, she emigrated to America with her parents and siblings arriving in New York on August 25, 1859. She married Mathias Fischer on January 21, 1860 at St Mark's Catholic Church in Shakopee, MN. Mathias was 34 and Rosa was 17. They settled on a farm in Lanesburgh Township, Le Sueur County, MN. Between 1860 and 1878, they had eight children. In 1876, within a period of less than a month, four of their children died of diphtheria; they were ages 6, 4, 2, and 1-day. In 1878, Adolph was born, but the only record of him in Minnesota is the 1880 MN census. Their oldest child, Mary (Mrs Tomas Jelinek), died of typhoid fever in 1880 at age 18. Rosa's husband died in early 1888 of consumption (tuberculosis). Daughter, Katerina (Mrs Joseph Stepan), died in 1889 at age 24. Only Anna (Mrs Joseph Jelinek) lived to old age.
