Edward D. Hilmer was born 5 January 1915, in Platte County, Nebraska, the eldest child of Frank and Thiebe (Oltmans) Hilmer. He attended rural schools and graduated from eighth grade at Platte County District 71 in May 1930. On Sept. 13, 1939, he married Pearl Ruth Adams of Columbus and they made their home on his farm northwest of Columbus. Two children, Shirley, and Thomas were born to this union. Early morning November 8, 1946, Ed suffered major burns from a kerosene explosion while attempting to light a stove in the house. His wife and children were able to escape safely. The house and all furnishings were completely destroyed. Ed was taken to the Lutheran Hospital, where he died later that afternoon. He was survived by his wife and two small children, his parents, four brothers and three sisters. He remained always in the hearts of his family . GOOD NEIGHBORS' FUND TURNED OVER TO DIST. 71 BOARD Good Neighbors' fund for Mrs. Edward Hilmer and her children reached $1,591.75... The Telegram today turned the fund, which is on deposit in Central National bank, over to the three members of the Dist. 71 school board - Otto Arndt, Ervin Mueller and Wm. J. Euteneuer - who will administer it, jointly, as trustees on behalf of Mrs. Hilmer and the children. Good Neighbors, near and far, have been very generous in creating this substantial fund, and The Telegram joins with the Dist. 71 school board and Mrs. Hilmer in this expression of sincere appreciation to every man, woman and child who contributed to it. -- December 1946
