Calvin David "Dave" Curlee was born on October 4, 1828 in Cannon County, Tennessee. Dave was 1 of 8 children born to Rev. Calvin and Rebecca Curlee. Calvin Curlee was a well known preacher who established the Curlee Church of Christ near Readyville, Tennessee which is still active today. Dave married Emily Luisa Welker Lyon on April 25, 1851 in Rutherford County, Tennessee. Emily was the daughter of Rev. Nathan Johnson Lyon and Henrietta Smoot Lyon. Dave and Emily had 3 children, Calvin Blackburn "Bud" Curlee, Mary Matilda Curlee Cawthorn and Elizabeth "Betty" Curlee Burnett. Dave enlisted in the 18th Tennessee Infantry, a Cannon County Company, C.S.A. He enlisted with his two younger brothers, Peyton "Fed" Becton Curlee and Thomas Gowan Curlee. He was released at Jackson Mississippi for being over age. (Film #5361) He re-enlisted in Company "G", 4th Regiment, 8th Tennessee Cavalry, C.S.A. In a signed statement before B.F. Wood, County Clerk for Cannon Co., dated August 27, 1903 - I enlisted in the 18th Tennessee regiment in the year 1881 was in that regiment at the fall of Fort Donelson and remained with them until they were exchanged and at the reorganization of that regiment, I was discharged by reason of being over age. I then returned home and enlisted in Company "G" 4th Tennessee Cavalry regiment and remained in the service of the war until the close and surrendered at Charlotte N.C. Epitaph on tombstone -" A loving husband, a father dear, lies buried here". Dave is buried in the Curlee cemetery. Note: Dave was my great, great grandfather on my father's side.
