ORD — Donald L. Severson, 96, of Ord passed away Tuesday, April 24, 2018, at Valley View Senior Village in Ord. Services are pending with the Ord Memorial Chapel. Mr. Severson was born June 19, 1921, in Ord to Louis and Elizabeth Severson. He attended Ord High School, enjoyed success with the great football teams of those years and also played basketball, graduating with the class of 1938. Don then attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. His studies were interrupted by Word War II when Don served his country, participating in two campaigns of active duty in the Army — one in North Africa and Sicily, the other in France and Germany. Don received three bronze stars as well as a good conduct medal but spoke more about the fact that the army basketball team he was a part of was undefeated while he was stationed back in Georgia. He returned to UNL, where he graduated in 1949 with an advanced degree in pharmacy. He was united in marriage to Lydia Mathauser on Nov. 27, 1946, in Ord. The couple made their home in Grand Island, where he worked as a pharmacist for 50 years, retiring from the Grand Island Clinic in 1999. Lydia taught in the Grand Island Public Schools at Howard Elementary School for 30 years, retiring from teaching in the 1980s. Don enjoyed photography, traveling the United States by car and was an electronics enthusiast. He also looked forward to prime rib once a week at the Saddle Club. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents and two brothers, Richard and Robert. He is survived by a brother and two sisters-in-law, Gerald and Janis Severson of Portland, Ore., and Darlene Severson of Ord, and four nieces and three nephews.
