ORD — Robert Dean “Rocky” Severson, 87, of Ord unexpectedly passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2015, at the CHI Good Samaritan Health Center in Kearney. Robert Dean Severson was born in Ord, Neb., on July 5, 1927, to Louis and Elizabeth Severson. Rocky entered St. Peter’s pearly gates via St. Andrews, where he no doubt bettered his age of 87 by several strokes. Robert was an active participant in many activities growing up in Ord. He was a great competitor and enjoyed being part of teams that had great success, including a football team that went 44-0. He proudly served in the United States Marines after graduating from Ord High School in 1945. In 1953, Robert received his B.A. in Business at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Robert married the love of his life, Darlene Novosad, on Jan. 8, 1955. R.D. pursued a career in the Government Accounting Office in Kansas City and Omaha, and then as an IRS Agent, living in Grand Island until 1967, when Robert went out on his own and established Severson Accounting in Ord. With the support of his wife, he built the firm, hired the right people and served the surrounding communities, including Ericson, Taylor, Burwell, Sargent, Comstock and Arcadia, making it the premier accounting firm it is today of Severson, Lammers & Abel, CPAs. He and Darlene worked at the firm until their retirement. Robert was a tireless conservationist and believed in being a good steward of the land. Hunting and golfing were a way of life. As anyone who arrived at the golf course during the “syndicate’s” presence knows, the group of friends coveted their game. His travels with family and friends on three continents always included golf and he was rewarded with two hole-in-ones. His adventures also included skiing the black slope of Steam Boat, ice skating at the age of 81 and canoeing down the river. His passion for music and arts was evident in his waterfall landscapes and Christmas light displays. He promoted music and the arts to his children and grandchildren. Robert loved traveling to see his daughter and grandchildren along with advising and investing with his son in multiple projects and ventures. Rocky continued to remain a member in organizations to include Library Board, Tree Board, Ord Golf Club, Knights of Columbus and VFW. Robert is remembered by his children and grandchildren as a man of ethics, intelligence, kindness, wit, adventure and was exceptional in the art of making homemade ice cream. He reminded us of the importance of family and relationships by always welcoming guests into his home and displaying respect and love for his wife of 60 years, whom he valued like no other in their precious relationship. Rocky is survived by his wife, Darlene; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Brent Sid of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard D. and Chieko Severson of Omaha; three grandchildren, Paloma A. Sid of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Robert M. and Emika A. Severson of Omaha; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Donald Severson of Grand Island and Gerald and Janis Severson of Portland, Ore.; a niece, Kyle Severson of Portland, Ore.; brothers-in law and sisters-in-law, Sharon Novosad of Ord, Joni and Nick Pelster of Walnut Creek, Calif., Millie Bartlett of Littleton, Colo. and Patti and John Vanderbeek of Valentine. R.D. and family are also thankful for the local support by Sharon Novosad and Rick and Carol Estudillo and others. Robert was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Richard R. Severson. Funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, 2015, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Ord. Father Josh Brown and Father Mark Maresh will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord Catholic Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Ord VFW Post 38 and American Legion Post 7029. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
