Bio
Lydia A. Severson, 91, of Grand Island died Monday, Feb. 17, 2014, at St. Francis Medical Center, Grand Island. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the chapel of Apfel Funeral Home, Grand Island, with the Rev. Bob Rhodes officiating. Burial will be at 1:15 p.m. at Ord Cemetery in Ord. Mrs. Severson was born Jan. 20, 1923, in Ord to Emil and Anna Mathauser. She attended rural schools, graduating from Ord High School with the class of 1941. She obtained a teaching certificate and taught rural schools in Valley County for several years. Later she earned her bachelor's degree in education from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln in 1950. She was united in marriage to Donald Severson, Nov. 27, 1946, in Ord. The couple made their home in Grand Island, where she taught in the Grand Island Public Schools at Howard Elementary School for 30 years. She retired from teaching in the 1980s. Her husband, Don, a pharmacist, retired from the Grand Island Clinic in 1999. She enjoyed traveling the United States in the car and collecting antique dishes. She in survived by her husband, Don; two brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Robert and Darlene Severson of Ord and Gerald and Janis Severson of Portland, Ore.; four nieces and three nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.
