U S Army Veteran ---------------------------------------- Gerald Severson Gerald Severson, 87, of Ord, Nebraska and Portland, Oregon, passed away on Tuesday, November 26, 2019, at Rose Lane Home in Loup City. Mr. Severson's wishes were to be cremated. Inurnment will be held in the spring of 2020 in the Ord City Cemetery. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Gerald was born February 20, 1932, at Ord, Nebraska to Louis and Elizabeth (Knebel) Severson, the youngest of four sons. He attended school at Ord and graduated in 1950, part of an "elite" group that went through 12 years together. They were famous for great class reunions and birthday phone calls (organized by Jim Misko) in the later years. In September of 1950, Gerald went to Lincoln to the University of Nebraska with all of $50 in his pocket to start his college career. He worked at many jobs during the next four years to put himself through school as did his three brothers before him. Gerald graduated in 1956, and then served for two years in the United States Army at Fort George G. Mead in Maryland. Upon discharge from the Army he returned to UNL where he earned a second degree in architecture; graduating in 1961. In 1958, Gerald married Janis Pocock at Ord, Nebraska. They had one daughter, Kyle in 1961. In 1962, they moved to Portland, Oregon where Gerald worked for several architectural firms before establishing his own office and Janis pursed a career in physical therapy. Gerald will be remembered by school mates for his drawing abilities and also by his daughter and nieces for his help with school art projects. He played football, basketball, and baseball at OHS and participated in drama, music and golf. While in Portland he was a member of the Sierra Club, Mt. Hood Study Group, AIA and the Presbyterian Church. He was instrumental in making the Oregon beaches public. He enjoyed the Portland Symphony, hiking, music of all kinds, skiing and fishing. Gerald and Janis traveled extensively in Europe. We will remember his artistic abilities, unique sense of humor (even after the onset of Alzheimer's this appeared at unexpected times) and amazing ability to perform various do-it-yourself jobs (he didn't like electrical chores!). Gerald is survived by his wife, Janis of Ord, NE and Depoe Bay, OR; a daughter, Kyle of Portland, OR; brothers-in-law and sisters-in law, Neal and Judi Pocock of Larkspur, CO, Carol and Don De Franq of Portland, OR and Palm Springs, CA, and Darlene Severson of Ord, NE; 3 nephews; and 4 nieces. He was preceded in death by his parent's; three brothers, Richard, Don and Robert Severson. Ord Memorial Chapel
