Evelyn Ella Kucera Gurecky was born in Rosenberg, TX on August 21, 1928 to Joe and Jane Kucera. In 1946, she met her husband, Charles Gurecky, at a cafe where she worked in Sugar Land, TX. They married on March 4, 1947 and had five children, son, Daniel and his wife, Bonnie; son Eugene; son, Donald and his wife, Rhea; son, Carl and his wife, Debbie; and daughter, Patsy and her husband, Michael Kubeczka. Her children blessed her with 10 grandchildren who later blessed her with 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Jane Kucera; husband, Charles Gurecky; and son, Eugene Gurecky. Evelyn was a strong woman with many traits and abilities, to say the least. Even being a young mother of 5 children didn't stop her from working hard. She spent many days picking cotton by hand while her young children rode on the cotton sacks beside her. Nothing could slow her down. Evelyn particularly enjoyed spending time in her garden. Not only did growing flowers, plants, and vegetables bring her joy but she was excellent at it. If you ever took a stroll through her garden with her, she could name each thing she had growing by name and type. She was an expert at gardening. When the time came to harvest all she had grown, she canned everything she could for her family. "Grandmas Pickles" were and still are one of her biggest hits. When the holidays came around, she would bake strawberry cupcakes and cherry pies. The grandkids used to hide them from one another just so they wouldn't have to share. That's how good Grandma's treats were. Evelyn wanted to be independent for as long as possible. If you came by with a plate from Captain D's, bananas from the supermarket, or just trimmed her trees, she thanked you profusely. She had to make sure you knew how grateful she was for whatever it was you did for her. If you took her a meal, you could return the next day to find the dish washed, dried, and waiting on the table to be returned to its rightful owner. "Grandma Gurecky", "Momma", "Evelyn", whatever it was that you called her, I'm sure we can all agree that she gave way more to everyone than she took. She was just kind that way. Many afternoons you could find Evelyn sitting on the porch with her blue bonnet, blue jeans, and button-down shirt with a Coke in hand. She sat there for hours at times, quiet and still, just soaking up the wonderful outdoors that surrounded her. She was content and peaceful and I imagine that's a pretty good place to be. Evelyn passed away at her home in Orchard, Tx. Though she will be greatly missed, I think we could all agree how humbling it is to know we have someone as graceful as Evelyn to watch over us all. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with a rosary at 6:30 p.m., on Wednesday, April 4, 2018, in the Chapel of Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home in Rosenberg.
