Bio

Evelyn I. Starkey, 94, of Grand Island died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2018, at the Good Samaritan Society Grand Island Village. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Apfel Funeral Home. The Rev. Cathryn Love will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island Cemetery. Evelyn was born Jan. 31, 1923, in Hall County to Detlef and Silda (Wagner) Stelk. She grew up in Hall County, attending Seedling Mile School, then Grand Island Senior High School, graduating in 1940. She married Harry Diekman on Jan. 8, 1946, at Grand Island. The couple farmed at Cairo, and Evelyn worked as a bookkeeper, holding positions with Farmer Union Cream and Produce Company, Grand Island Finance Company and Production Credit Association. She had been employed at Production Credit Association for 20 years when she retired in 1981. Mr. Diekman died on May 18, 1983. Evelyn married Clifford Starkey on May 27, 1988, at Grand Island. Evelyn was a member of the Platt-Deutsch Ladies Society, Saddle Club and the Eagles. She enjoyed traveling, camping, gardening and playing cards. Those left to cherish her memory include two stepdaughters, Connie Baird of Grand Island, and Pat and Jim Reese of Dallas, Texas; brother, Elmer Stelk of Grand Island; and four stepgrandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and sisters, Dorothy Tooman and Elaine Collier.
