Grand Island (Nebraska) Herald; Thursday 7 April 1927, page 1 Pioneer of Hall Co. Enters Great Beyond With the death of Mrs. Catherine Lassen, nonagenarian, Hall county is called upon to mourn the loss of one of its oldest residents, one who has spent sixty-three years on the same place, taken up as a homestead many years ago. The death of "Grandma: Lassen, as she was known by countless friends, occurred at the home of her son, Sherman, residing three miles south of the city at about 6 p.m. Sunday. Free from suffering, sinking gradually into her long last sleep, and conscious almost to the last, she realized that the end was near and had confided to members of the immediate family, that she was 'very tired' and slipped quietly away at the remarkable age of 94 years, 6 months and 29 days. General debility was given as the cause of death. She was born in Tetenbul, Herzog, Germany, on September 5, 1832. Her marriage to John Lassen took place in Germany in 1849. Four years later they came to America, locating in Clinton, Ia., where they resided for several years. In the spring of 1864, they came to Hall county, locating on the homestead which is now occupied by the son, Sherman, with whom she has made her home for thirty-five years. Surviving her are three sons, Sherman and Harry, of this vicinity; John, of British Columbia, Canada; three daughters, Mrs. Margaret Obermiller of Farwell; Mrs. John Bushman, of this city; Mrs. Agatha Sweeney, of Tacoma, Wash.; as also 41 grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were the husband, who passed away in 1890, and eight children who are as follows: Mrs. Anna Marie Shoemaker, Mrs. Marie Schwieger, Mrs. Catherine Clausen, Henry Conrad Lasses, Mrs. Johanna Matthiesen, Miss Dora Lassen, Mrs. Lydia Wright, and one child who passed away in infancy. Funeral services will be held from St. Paul's English Lutheran church at two o'clock today and will be in charge of Rev. C. B. Harman. A brief service will be held at the late home for immediate family at 1 p.m. Interment will be made in the Grand Island cemetery.
