Helen V. Ferrier Carter 24 October 1916 - 26 August 2017 *** Helen F. Carter After a long and fruitful life, Helen F. Carter, 100, went home to her Lord at the Parsons Presbyterian Manor at 9:40 p.m., Saturday, August 26, 2017. She was born to Charles and Eva (Stine) Ferrier on October 24, 1916, on a farm southwest of Altamont. She grew up on their family farm, learning how to work and get things accomplished. Church and education were important to her family. She graduated from Labette County High School in 1934 and Parsons Junior College in 1936. She taught in a country school near Altamont while she saved money to continue her education at Kansas State University. She graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Home Economics from Kansas State University in 1942. Helen met Charles O. Carter, Jr., at KSU and they were united in marriage in [April 2,] 1943. They later moved to Chanute and had three children. Helen went back to school and got her Master's Degree in Social Work from Pittsburg State University. She worked as a social worker and supervisor for SRS in Parsons for many years. She enjoyed her work of helping families and children. Helen enjoyed being active in her church, First Baptist Church of Parsons, helping her kids with their piano lessons, sewing, gardening and cooking. She was an officer in the local AARP chapter and was on the Red Cross Board of Directors. She also was involved with the bond issue to renovate the building which is now the Parsons Middle School. She is survived by two children, Phil Carter and wife, Diana, of Pittsburg and Charlotte Ecoff and husband, Doug, of Parsons; her sister, Nema Holmes and husband Fred, of South Carolina; three grandchildren, Chris Carter (Jennifer) of Topeka, Jennifer Foreback (William) of Junction City and Anna Ecoff of Parsons; four great-granddaughters and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Loeva Carter , in April of 1973. [Note: She & Charles O. Carter, Jr., divorced, he remarried to Joan Turner on July 2, 1963 in Chanute, Kansas.] A committal service will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery at Altamont, with a Memorial Service to follow at 2:30 p.m., Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Parsons. Rev. Wayne Mason will officiate. Following the church service the family will receive friends at a reception in the church fellowship hall. Friends may call at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home throughout the day Friday. Memorial donations are encouraged for the Labette Community College Foundation or the First Baptist Church of Parsons.
